roy ayers / center of the world

The late 70’s and early 80’s was a transitional time for Roy Ayers, where you hear him switching from the mystical funk jazz sound into more of the upbeat disco sound, and this 1981 album entitled center of the world is a direct reflection that transition. Roy Ayers was not the only artists making this gradual shift, and in fact, almost all jazz artists from the 70’s were following this trend. But in the midst of Roy following the musical trend, there was one thing that set Roy Ayers apart from other musicians. It was that Roy continued to promote the message of afrocentricity and spirituality. He wore his heritage on his sleeve for the world to see, and his pride in Africa was well documented by collaborating with Fela Kuti, the title names on this particular album and the name of the album itself, just to name a few examples.This album may not be known by many Roy Ayers fans, but it is one that should certainly not be over looked. Enjoy the quintessential melodic sounds of Roy Ayers, in transition.

george duke / i love the the blues she heard me cry

The list of heavyweights who join George Duke on 1975's I Love the Blues: She Heard My Cry is impressive -- some of the participants include Johnny "Guitar" Watson, singer Flora Purim, percussionist Airto Moreira, guitarist Lee Ritenour, drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, and guitarist George Johnson (of Brothers Johnson fame). With such a cast, one would expect this 1975 LP to be outstanding, which it isn't. But it's a respectable effort that thrives on diversity. The highlights of this album range from decent fusion instrumentals, like "That's What She Said," "Giant Child Within Us-Ego," and "Sister Serene," to the mellow soul ballad "Someday" and the Jimi Hendrix-like heavy metal/hard rock offering "Rokkinrowl," which finds Duke singing lead and contains some of Ritenour's more forceful playing. Meanwhile, Duke and Watson perform a vocal duet on the title song, which is the only 12-bar blues number on the album. In 1975, some jazz fans wished that the artist would stick to instrumental fusion and stay away from R&B and rock singing, but, in fact, it was jazz that Duke would eventually move away from. I Love the Blues, She Heard My Cry isn't recommended to those who only want to hear Duke as an instrumentalist, although it's enjoyable if you like hearing some rock, soul, and blues singing along with your fusion.

carl graig & pepe bradock / angola

Originally issued early 2003 this was greeted with rapturous applause by all Carl Craig and Pepe Braddock heads as some of their finest works to date. This of course helped no doubt by the soulful african vocals of Cesaria Evora. Shame it didn't hang around too long which makes this limited repress all the more welcome. Carl's mix was the first of his torrent of remix work since early 2003 and it's easily his finest (if you own just one Craig remix then make sure it's this one), crisp handclaps, minimal beats, haunting african chants - this track builds and builds into a groove that's so heavy no one alive will be ready to keep still, so wicked it hurts. Pepe Braddock's mixes show this man at his best - drugged up percussive dub house and a version that reflects a more latinized mood. A future classic 12", limited copies only.

clifford coulter / the better part of me

Clifford Coulter was a soul-jazz and blues pianist who gradually moved more into urban R&B. His early recordings for the ABC label in the early '70s were full of a bright, sweet sound and were recommended listening for anybody interested in the funkier side of soul-jazz. This disc, cut in 1980 and produced by none other than Bill Withers, is a very commercial and radio-friendly set of funky soul. Coulter's writing and arranging are nice and tight and virtually full of singles -- it is a wonder he didn't score any with this. Music was as fickle a business coming out of the disc era as it is in the 21st century. Coulter's sound, while contemporary, is rooted in the soul balladry of an earlier time. His songwriting is top-notch and his session players, who include Withers, Russ Kunkel, Ronnie Beck, Jerry Perez, and others, are empathetic on tunes like the mellow grooving opener, "Don't Wanna See You Cry," and "Magic Carpet Ride" (not that one). On ballads such as "Nothing in the World Is Free," Coulter's own singing wrenches emotion out of a slick soul tune and puts it in the listener's breadbasket. This is as fine a specimen of urban soul as there was at the time. It should have been a smash.

L.A.カリフォルニア出身の女性シンガーソングライターでピアニスト。元々はJazz畑のアーティストで、1972年のMonterey Jazz Festivalの受賞者だったりもしますが、82年発売のこの曲は完全に、R&B、ディスコ路線になっていて、現在のR&B、HIP HOPアーティストもリスペクトされ、Common"Reminding Me"、Faith Evans"Fallin' in Love"、Intelligent Hoodlum"Grand Groove"などなど、本当に数多くのアーティストにカバー、サンプリングされまくっている名曲です。

静かな、夜の海辺で聴きたいですね♪

philip cohran and the artistic heritage ensemble

Phil Cohran is one of America’s resounding jazz survivors. In the late 50s he was introduced into the fold of Sun Ra’s legendary Arkestra, but it is with his own ‘Artistic Heritage Ensemble’ that he really made his name. This record (usually referred to as ‘On the Beach’) is where his virtuoso skill really stands out, and his steadfast desire to create a sound that was different from his peers is obvious from even the opening bars. This is where Chicago jazz (rather than its then way more popular New York counterpart) came into its own, and Cohren is still considered a crucial player in the scene. These days he can be spotted flexing his chops at a local Egyptian restaurant, and he is as much a part of the city’s rich history as Al Capone or the Sears Tower. From the pioneering ‘New Frankiphone Blues’ which used an amplified kalimba as its lead instrument to the smoky vocal-led ‘Motherhood’ ‘On The Beach’ is a gold standard in far-reaching out sound. If you’re reading this site then you probably like your music slightly to the left of centre, so do yourself a favour and add this record to your collection – you won’t be disappointed.
